Illinois’ men’s basketball team faced a setback as star player Terrence Shannon Jr. was suspended due to rape charges filed in Kansas.
The charges stem from an alleged incident that occurred back in September during the football team’s visit to Lawrence, Kansas, to compete against the Jayhawks. Notably, Shannon was not part of the university’s traveling party during that event.
The Douglas County District attorney issued a warrant for Shannon’s arrest on Wednesday, prompting his voluntary travel to Lawrence to surrender to authorities. He posted bail before returning to Champaign, Illinois, where he was subsequently suspended from all team activities, effective immediately, as announced by the school.
Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman emphasized the university’s zero-tolerance policy toward sexual misconduct in a statement. He highlighted the importance of affording student-athletes due process while upholding stringent standards for addressing such allegations.
Whitman affirmed, “We will rely on that policy and our prior experiences to manage this situation appropriately for the University and the involved parties.”

Shannon, who joined Illinois from Texas Tech before the 2021-22 season, had been a pivotal player, featuring in 11 games this season. His absence will undoubtedly impact the team, given his average of 21.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game.
The university clarified that while they were aware of the allegations since last September, concrete actional information was only received on Wednesday, leading to the immediate response of suspending Shannon.
