The IRS has announced that the 2024 tax season will begin on Monday, January 29, 2024, marking the start of accepting and processing 2023 tax returns.

As taxpayers brace themselves for this annual financial responsibility, it’s imperative to note the significant dates and noteworthy adjustments that characterize Tax Season 2024.

The IRS foresees a substantial workload, with an estimated influx of more than 128.7 million individual tax returns expected by the deadline of April 15, 2024.

While the official start date for acceptance and processing is January 29, individuals utilizing software companies or tax professionals have the option to commence their tax preparations beforehand.

A notable feature of this upcoming season is the introduction of the IRS Direct File pilot, slated to launch in phases beginning mid-March. This service provides eligible taxpayers with a new option to electronically file their 2023 federal tax returns directly with the IRS, free of charge.

In addition to this innovation, the IRS is rolling out several enhancements aimed at bolstering services and efficiency.

The IRS has announced that the 2024 tax season will begin on Monday, January 29, 2024, marking the start of accepting and processing 2023 tax returns.

Expanded in-person services at Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TACs), enhanced customer call-back support on the toll-free line, and enhancements to the popular “Where’s My Refund?” tools which provides taxpayers with more precise and comprehensive updates are a few of these.

Furthermore, the IRS underscores the importance of electronic filing with direct deposit, emphasizing its status as the fastest and easiest method to receive a refund.

While IRS Free File and Free File Fillable forms cater to taxpayers with various income levels, individuals should remain vigilant about potential delays in refund processing, particularly for returns subject to additional review under the federal Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act.

Key dates for the 2024 filing season include the opening of IRS Free File on January 12 and the start date for individual tax returns on January 29. Taxpayers should also be mindful of deadlines, with penalties and interest accruing for late filings. An automatic extension can be obtained by submitting IRS Form 4868, extending the deadline until October 15.

In conclusion, as Tax Season 2024 unfolds, taxpayers are urged to leverage new features, stay informed about key dates, and utilize IRS-provided tools to facilitate a smooth and successful filing process.
