Pompano Beach, Florida
Pompano Beach is located on the southeast coast of Florida, just twelve miles from the Ft. Lauderdale / Hollywood International Airport and Port Everglades. It lies at equal distances from Miami and Palm Beach, being about 33 miles away from both cities. It is the third largest city in Broward County with a population of approximately eighty-five thousand people. Almost a quarter of the people are of African American descent and 10% of Hispanic origin. More than 20% of the residents were born abroad making Pompano Beach a true melting pot of many races and cultures.
About The Community
The city was incorporated in 1908 and at that time, it was a part of Dade County though it was once in Palm Beach County. Its early claim to fame was that it was the southernmost railroad station of the famous Florida East Coast Railway. The first train arrived here in 1896. Agriculture was the main occupation but the city grew rapidly into a beach town on the eastern side while it was a farming town on the western side. In 1947, the original city of Pompano merged with the beach area and was officially renamed as the City of Pompano Beach. Today despite its rapid growth and development, Pompano Beach is a quiet seaside community with the benefits of a major metropolitan area.
