Bushnell in Sumter County is located in scenic West Central Florida. It is located on I-75 and is 42 miles south of Ocala and 60 miles north of Tampa. This rural community is an ideal option for relocation, as it is a wonderful place to retire to and also to raise children. About The Community
Bushnell was first settled in 1884 and is named in honor of John Bushnell who was an engineer. He was responsible for laying the rail road tracks from Bushnell to Panasoffkee. Today, Bushnell has a population of about 3,100 with a fair mix of races. It is the seat of government for Sumter County. The Bushnell public library looks after the literary needs of the local population. The children from the area receive a good education at the local public school, the South Sumter High School.

Bushnell has convenient shopping for daily needs with grocery stores and a Wal-Mart and has access to all of Florida with its great transportation connections to I-75, HWY 301, and the Florida Turnpike. Shopping malls in both Ocala and Tampa are just 45 minutes each way. Bushnell is conveniently connected to other major metropolitan areas too, such as; Orlando, Daytona Beach and Wildwood. There are day trips galore that one can take from here too. Disney World, Universal Studios, Sea World, Epcot Center, Busch Gardens, Silver Springs, Homosassa Springs, Weeki Wachee and other points of interest are all within easy reach and commute time to these areas is less than an hour.

There are retirement communities on the scenic lake side terrain with conveniently located golf courses in the neighborhood. The amenities at these communities and the companionship of peers makes this a sought after neighborhood for retirement. There are several camp grounds and mobile home parks in the neighborhood too. They serve as an ideal base to explore the attractions of the surrounding towns. Restaurants off the highways are perfect for a family meal or quick bite. Sports enthusiasts can watch baseball at the spring camps and root for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fall.
Dade Battlefield Historic State Park is a popular spot for a family outing or picnic. There is a small Museum that is open daily with exhibits pertaining to the battle and that era. The unspoiled wooded surroundings with oaks other beautiful aging trees as well as wild flowers provides wonderful peaceful Nature trails. There are well laid out picnic areas and also well equipped designated play grounds, courts for tennis and other games.
