According to his attorney’s confirmation to Fox News Digital on Monday, a 29-year-old man who was connected to a 2022 mass shooting in Sacramento, California that claimed six lives was discovered dead in his cell over the weekend.

Smiley Martin passed away early on Saturday morning, according to a written statement from his public attorney Norman Dawson to Fox News Digital. Martin was awaiting trial on three felonies related to the incident on April 3, 2022.

“It is most tragic that Mr. Martin passed away, fighting to defend his innocence in the preliminary hearing process,” the statement said.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office announced on social media that a 29-year-old prisoner passed away on Saturday at 2:15 a.m. while in custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail, without naming the dead individual.

The man’s name will be made public once his next of kin have been notified, according to the sheriff’s office, and the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will ascertain the cause of death. According to the sheriff’s office, the death is still being looked into.

During a cell check, jail authorities found one unconscious prisoner, according to the sheriff’s office. He was declared dead at the site, according to the sheriff’s office, even though the deputies tried life-saving measures right away until the fire department and medical personnel responded.

In connection with the incident on April 3, 2022, Martin was facing felony charges of murder, felon in possession of a handgun, and possession and transportation of a machine gun. These accusations were pending trial.

Around two in the morning, as bargoers crowded the streets for closing time, more than a hundred shots were fired in a downtown entertainment district close to the state Capitol building. Social media users shared witness footage of the shooting, which showed people screaming in fear and running away from the gunfire for at least 45 seconds.

Twelve people, including two of the suspected shooters, were injured in addition to three women and three men who died from gunshot wounds. Authorities say there were at least five gunmen involved.

After being hospitalized for gunshot wounds, 27-year-old Martin was taken into custody and accused.
