Mortensen’s illustrious career spanned decades, during which he became renowned as the original NFL insider at ESPN. He joined the network in 1991 and played a pivotal role in shaping its NFL coverage, contributing to programs such as “Sunday NFL Countdown” and “Outside The Lines. His insightful analysis and comprehensive reporting earned him widespread respect and admiration.

Despite his professional success, Mortensen faced personal challenges, including a battle with Stage 4 throat cancer, which he revealed in 2016. In September 2023, after his 33rd NFL draft coverage, he announced his decision to step away from ESPN to prioritize his health, family, and faith.
